Recognition and Awards

REPRESENTATIVE DAVE MCALPIN HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED LOCALLY, STATEWIDE AND NATIONALLY FOR HIS EFFECTIVENESS AND HARD WORK:

    • Elected Minority Whip of the Montana House by Democratic Legislators in 2006. As Whip with Rep. Margaret Campbell (Poplar), they lead the caucus and develop and execute strategies to stand up for Montana families with the House Leadership team.
    • A founding member of the Progressive States Network (PSN), a new national think tank created to assist legislators across the country in passing progressive public policy such as access to healthcare, tax fairness, wage growth, and sustainable energy policies.
    • Dave is one of only 32 legislators in the nation selected to join the 2006 class of the Flemming Leadership Institute. He was the first Missoula legislator ever selected for the fellowship, joining alumni Sen. Jon Tester (D) and Lt. Gov. John Bohlinger (R) in the bipartisan national leadership-training program.
    • Awarded the Distinguished Service Award for 2005 by the Montana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, for his bill to advance P.E. as one of the best ways to reduce obesity among youth in Montana.
    • Recognized by the Montana Coalition for the Prevention of Domestic Violence for his 2005 work to sponsor and pass a bill to fund court officers to enforce court sentences against perpetrators of domestic violence, and a bill to reimburse health care providers for the cost of forensic rape kits for victims of rape and domestic assault.
    • Appointed by Governor Schweitzer to serve on the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Advisory Board of Directors in 2005, in recognition of his years of service in tobacco use prevention.
    • As a member of Legislative Leadership, Dave serves during the interim on the Legislative Council Committee which directs operations of the Legislative Branch when the Legislature is not in session.
    • Asked to present his HJ 17, a resolution to increase physical education in schools, to the MT Board of Public Education by Linda McCullough, Superintendent of Public Instruction. HJ 17 was recognized by the National Conference of State Legislatures magazine as a good option to address growing childhood obesity.
    • Awarded “Leader of the Pack” designation by the American Lung Association of the Northern Rockies, Montana chapter of the American Heart Association, and Montana Division of the American Cancer Society, for his work to pass local smoke-free ordinances in Montana.
